The Pitmen had to overcome a spirited fight back by the previously unbeaten at home UniBond Division One South side to progress into the draw for the next round of the FA Trophy. Ross Draper and Elliott Durrell had put the Pitmen two up inside ten minutes it looked as if they were in for an easy afternoon but they did not account for Stamford’s Danny Cotton who pulled two back before Draper added another before the break.

In the fourth minute an Elliott Durrell pile-driver of a shot laid out Ross Dyer who got in the way of the ball. He needed treatment off the field but returned soon after albeit slighty winded and probably a little sore.

The opening goal of the game was scored by Ross Draper who stabbed the ball home from six yards in the 7th minute after Anthony Maguire had headed back Tyrone Barnett’s cross from the right. After Elliott Durrell had won a tenth minute corner the ball was whipped into the box by Chad Sheppard. The pace on the ball took it away from the players congregated inside the penalty area but it found Barnett who headed the ball back down for Durrell to hit home from close range.

A good cross field ball from the left by Draper picked out Sam Hall, his cross into the box was cleared back to him by former Pitman Chris Gray. Hall took the ball on towards the goal and from an acute angle hit a fierce shot which Martin Davies tipped over for a corner kick

Stamford pulled a goal back in the 14th minute when Danny Cotton hit a speculative 35 yard shot which kept low and went just inside the left hand post. Stuart Brock made a full length dive to his right in an attempt to reach the ball but was unable to stop the ball going into the net.

After Tom Marshall had lost possession on the left wing Stamford’s leading goalscorer Jamie Clarke was stopped on a break to goal by a well timed tackle by Danny Harvey

Chris Gray who wore the Pitmen Pete outfit at Villa Park back in 2004 as he was cup tied for the Pitmen and is now Stamford’s Captain did well when cutting out a Dyer chip forward to Barnett by heading the ball back to davies.

Phil Stebbing made a run across from the left and after surviving the attempts to tackle him he passed to the unmarked Cotton who tapped the ball into the net from close range to equalise in the 24th minute.

Sam Hall was seeing a lot of the ball , another forward pass to Durrell was just a fraction to heavy as the midfielder broke into the Stamford penalty area.

Ross Draper restored the Pitmen’s lead in the 34th minute in a move he started and finished. On the half way line he won the ball and sent a pass cross field for Sam Hall. Draper continued his run which Hall spotted, he hit an inch perfect pass for Draper who from the right of the penalty area hit a first time shot past Martin Davies the Stamford keeper.

In the 37th minute Durrell tried his luck with as shot from the left which Davies held onto. Barnett went close with a shot from 20 yards which went just past the right hand post after the Referee allowed play to continue after Dyer had received a kick in the face.

With the wind behind them in the second half Stamford pressed for an equaliser. A good chance fell to Jamie Clarke who headed over a header from six yards out in the 58th minute then in the 70th minute Brock needed to use his chest to stop another effort by Cotton.

The dangerous Cotton was well covered by Chad Sheppard as he made a run into the Pitmen’s penalty area. He held the player off from making a shot finally winning the ball to lay off to Sam Hall who kicked the ball up field.

Decio Gomes was cautioned in the 78th minute after he hauled down Stebbings on the half way line as he attempted to break clear after a poor Pitmen corner put the defence under pressure.

Durrell tried a 25 yard effort after a quick passing move had created the opening. A chance fell to Stamford after Maguire had conceded a foul on the home sides right wing. The free kick into the box was met by centre back Shaun Pearson who glanced a header just wide of the left hand post.

In the 86th minute Adam Burley replaced Ant Maguire.

In the 89th minute Chad Sheppard made an amazing run down the left and then continued his run to beat another defender on the bye-line. He then picked out Ross Dyer with a pass which allowed the Pitmen striker to smash the ball into the net from 15 yards out.

The home team continued to press forward in an attempt to hold onto this seasons unbeaten home record, Substitute Adam Cunnington was denied by a point blank save by Brock then in the first minute of added on time Danny Cotton struck a 25 yard shot to score his hat-trick goal and ensure the Pitmen endured a nervous few moments before the Referee finally blew for full tim
