The Pitmen comfortably beat their Conference North opponents to set up a home tie in the first round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy against Nantwich Town on December 13th.

Decio Gomes seemed to be targeted for some rough treatment in the opening minutes having to take a couple of cheap shots whilst trying to clear the ball.

Stuart Brock was needed to tip over a speculative shot from 25 yards by Hyde full back Adam Oakes early in the game but for the rest of the 90 minutes he was virtual spectator as the Pitmen dictated the play.

Danny Harvey played a great pass forward to the right for Sam Hall who took the ball on, he played the ball towards the near post where Ross Dyer attempted a flick shot which the keeper saved at the near post.

Tom Marshall surprisingly returned to the team after limping off during the warm up on Saturday hit a 30 yard shot which Craig Dootson held onto at the second attempt. Elliott Durrell was crudely brought down by Nathan Wharton and rolling in agony he needed to be treated off the field off play.

Brock was alert as he raced off his line to slide in to take a through ball which Chris Simm was hoping to get onto as he raced into the box.

The opening goal came in the 14th minute when Hyde’s Steve Williams volleyed a Sam Hall cross from the right into his own net. The chances then started to flow, Ross Draper held off a defender to hit a shot which Dootson saved, Ross Dyer tried to follow up but his effort was blocked. The ball rebounded out to Chad Sheppard who hit a firm shot just wide of the left hand post.

In the 18th minute Wharton who was let off a caution earlier did not escape the Referee’s book when he was shown a yellow for a foul tackle on Ross Draper
Tyrone Barnett turned to hit a firm shot which was saved well by Dootson., however if he had scored it would have been disallowed as instead of a corner the Referee awarded the visitors a free kick for a hand ball by Barnett during the build up.

Hyde were only making the occasional excursion into the Pitmens half and were only shooting from distance, Brock did well holdingonto a 30 yard effort which stayed low. As a result of Whartons earlier tackle Durrell had to be substituted by Mark Briggs in the 27th minute.

The Hyde defence nearly scored another own goal in the 30th minute when Dyer chased a long ball to the right hand corner flag, he took the ball inside and pulled it back into the penalty area where Hyde’s Chris Brass could not get out of the way of the ball as it hit him then crashed of the right hand post. The danger was still not over as Tyrone Barnett tried a shot which was deflected for a corner.

Hall’s corner was met by Draper whose header was deflected away for another corner. Draper went close with a high volley which just went over the crossbar after Hall’s throw in from the right was headed on by Dyer towards Barnett but the ball was cleared to Draper.

Draper made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute when he outpaced a Hyde defender to chase a long ball which he took into the box before he coolly placed the ball past the keeper and into the net.

The Pitmen defenders were playing the ball across the back line in the 40th minute then Marshall hit a long diagonal ball to Hall who from the right hand edge of the penalty area headed the ball for Dyer to place a header on target. Dootson not for the first time blocked his effort and was relieved when Briggs followed up and hit his shot over the crossbar.

Another good chance was lost when Adam Burley found Draper on the left, he cut in and set up an easy chance for Dyer but his side footed shot went just wide of the right hand post. Burley hit a cross into the box which Dootson cut out after Briggs had won a tackle in midfield to set the full back free on the left.

The second half was only seconds old when the Pitmen went further ahead, Marshall hit a long ball for Dyer whose pace allowed him to get to the ball first. He took the ball round Dootson to score with a left footed shot.

Tyrone Barnett who had already had a number of chances in the game finally found the net in the 60th minute, Draper made a run across from the left to make the pass to Barnett on the right and from the edge of the box he hit a firm shot which flew into the visitors net. A slight deflection left Dootson totally flatfooted.

It seemed that every time the Pitmen went forward they would score, a good move saw Barnett pull the ball back for Briggs who with an open goal hit the post for the second game running. The ball bounced back into play to Dyer who hit the ball over the Town End stand.

Chad Sheppard was lucky to stay on the pitch when in the 63rd minute he was cautioned for a poor tackle on Chris Brass. Dean Edwards ensured the player did not get sent off as he took him off minutes later to be replaced by Sean Platt.

Ross Draper was the next to clear the stand after Dyer had dribbled the ball along the left hand bye-line, he hit a firm shot from an acute angle which a defender nearly scuffed back into the net but somehow he managed to clear it but only to Draper who with the goal at his mercy hit the ball over the stand.

Ant Maguire came on for Adam Burley in the 75th minute then a minute later Briggs hit a cross from the right into the box where Barnett hit a tremendous volley which went inches over the crossbar.

The forwards were finding space easy to find, another flowing move saw Barnett set Dyer free with a well weighted first touch. Dyer then pulled the ball back inside for his strike partner who again cleared the Town End stand.

The small band of Hyde supporters were amusing the crowd by singing they would win 5-4 when Sam Hall put the final nail in the visitors coffin by hitting a firm low shot from 20 yards through a crowded goal mouth into the far side of the net.
