Hednesford Town 3 Nantwich Town 2

Early in the game Ross Draper made a driving run down the left despite the defenders pulling at his shirt, from the bye-line he pulled the ball back into the box for Ross Dyer who with his back to goal laid a well weighted pass back for Anthony Maguire. The full back hit a firm low shot from 25 yards which was blocked on its way to goal. The ball went to Tom Marshall whose cross back into the box for Tyrone Barnett was just a fraction to high which allowed Gibson to clear.

Nantwich won a corner when Marshall managed to head away a fiercely hit shot from outside of the box. The corner was wasted when it was over hit past the far post.

Marshall was in the 12th minute provider again as his cross from the left forced Barnett to stretch to head over from 6 yards.

In the 22nd minute Ross Draper hit a low cross into the box from the left for Elliott Durrell. The midfielder tried to get the ball onto his right foot but the ball rolled away to Ross Dyer who shot just wide of the right hand post.

Durrell did better two minutes later, Anthony Maguire sent a great ball in from the left wing into the box but despite being the smallest player on the pitch Durrell beat the covering defender to the ball to send a looping header into the top left hand corner of the net.

The lead did not last long as in the 27th minute when unmarked in the centre of the goal former Pitman Dave Whittaker sent a firm header past Stuart Brock from a Ashley Westwood cross from the left. Ross Draper was cautioned for a tackle on Phil Parkinson a minute later.

Stuart Brock was the busier of the two keepers, he had to race to the edge of the box to collect the ball just beating Walker and Michael Lennon as they broke clear. Brock then had to make a save at his near post after a mistake allowed a cross to reach Gibson. A mistake then by Decio Gomes allowed Walker the Nantwich centre forward a clear run on goal but he was denied a goal when Brock parried his firm shot away after closing down the angle.

Barnett went close with a header from a Draper cross which went inches wide of the right hand post. Nantwich's Ashley Westwood who is on loan from Crewe was cautioned in the 40th minute for a foul on Ross Draper. Brock was again in action when before the break he managed to block a shot from Westwood.

The half time talk by Dean Edwards had instant results as within a minute of the restart Durrell had forced Lee Jones into a diving save to tip his shot around the post for a corner kick.

In the 50th minute Sam Hall hit a shot from 15 yards which Jones blocked, he ball rebounded back to Ross Dyer who powered the ball into the far side of the net.

As in the first half the Pitmen failed to hold onto to the lead for long as within two minutes they were back level after Ashley Carters cross from the right hit Decio Gomes head and looped over Brock and into the net.

Pitmen celebrate what was to be the winning goal
In the 60th minute the Pitmen took the lead for the third time in the game and what a good goal it was as well, Dyer received the ball on the right of the box and despite being closely marked he turned to hit a firm left footed shot into the net of the right hand post.

Nantwich pressed hard for an equaliser, Walker was again denied by Brock when he saved a glancing header at the base of his right hand post. Walker soon after made an excellent run from the left into the box, he pulled the ball back into the penalty area but luckily it went behind his team mates which allowed the danger to be cleared.d post.

Tyrone Barnett was cautioned in the 76th minute for pulling Damion Jarrett's shirt which was in retaliation after the former Pitmen had pulled Barnetts shirt. Unfortunately the Referee only saw the latter offencem hall should have done better in the 82nd minute when he hit an excellent Durrell cross well wide of the goal.

Deep into injury time Nantwich's Ashley Westwood was sent off after getting a second yellow for an innocuous challenge on the half way line. In the end the Pitmen managed to hold on to the slender lead and set up a home match against Welling United at Keys Park on Saturday 10th January 2009.
