(Ross Dyer 3, Ross Draper 2)
The Pitmen extended their run of consecutive wins to nine after Ross Dyer had scored a hat trick and Ross Draper had added a brace to defeat Worksop Town by Five goals to nil.
The visitors who are known as the Tigers certainly did not play as their nickname suggested as they came not attack but defend in numbers. The game started with the Tigers playing one up front and he wore tights which gave the impression that he was not up for much of a battle.
The early challenges were flying in and an over zealous arial challenge by Andy Boyce in the 7th minute flattened Tyrone Barnett
Tom Marshall was starting a number of the Pitmen moves from the back, a quick break out saw him send a pass to Mark Briggs in the centre, he shook off his marker to hit a forward pass to Elliott Durrell who sent Ross Dyer away into the right of the Tigers box but the striker was unable to control the ball as it ran out for a goal kick.
With little attacking ideas from the opponents Marshall went on a good run down the left wing. His pace enabled him to outrun his marker and from the bye-line he hit a good cross towards the middle which Chris Glarvey headed out for a corner kick.
The Tigers bolstered defence was finally beaten in the 22nd minute when Elliott Durrell forced Steve Hernandez to tip over a fierce shot for a corner kick. The corner taken by Sam Hall was short to Mark Briggs but his cross failed to beat the first defender which probably caused a comment or two from the Manager at half time.
The opening goal came from another corner in the 31st minute after a quick break out of defence which ended with Tyrone Barnett’s shot being deflected for the corner. Briggs hit a firm cross into the box which Hernandez punched off Durrell’s head straight to Ross Dyer who hit the ball home through the crowded six yard box.
Hernandez saved the visitors from going further behind shortly after when he dived full length to tip away a fierce shot from Briggs. Dyer tried to take advantage of the loose ball but the angle was to tight forcing him to shoot wide of the left hand post..
The second goal soon came when Ant Maguires 37th minute deep cross from the left was missed by Hernandez and fell to Ross Draper. The Pitmen Captain turned just inside the box to hit a firm shot into the middle of the net.
Stuart Brock who had been a spectator for most of the half was called into action in the 42nd minute when the defence failed to clear after the ball had bobbled on the Keys Park surface. The resulting ccross into the box was cut out by the Pitmen keeper. He was soon in action having to collect a shot from Worksop’s Matt Glass
The Pitmen continued to push forward in the second half, Ross Dyer used his pace to fly past a defender down the right wing then Sam Halls corner found Dyer who turned to lift his shot well over Hernandez’s crossbar. In the 50th minute the Pitmen went three goals up after Ross Draper made an attacking run down the middle, He slipped the ball forward to Dyer who took the ball in to the box from where he hit a low firm shot past Hernandez.
After receiving a knock by the right hand touchline Sean Platt replaced Sam Hall in the 54th minute
In the 58th minute Worksop’s Phil Rowland went over the top of ball bringing Dyer down. The tackle caused a scuffle between the players which after consulting his Assistants the Referee cautioned both players.
Draper was covering every blade of grass and in the 60th minute he was back in his own penalty area to make a well timed tackle on former Pitman Chris Adam just as he was about to shoot.
After Adam Burley had replaced Ant Maguire in the 67th minute it was Draper who lifted the crowd when he won the ball in the centre circle. He took the ball down the middle then tried to place his shot just inside the right hand post but on this occasion Hernandez made a full length diving save to push the ball away.
Hernandez was keeping the Pitmen at bay as he soon denied Durrell a goal after Barnett had made an attacking right wing run. The striker hit a perfect cross into the box which Durrell volleyed first time but the Tigers keeper made an excellent instinctive save by diving to push the firmly hit ball away.
In the 70th minute the Pitmen scored a fourth goal for the fourth game in a row. Barnett’s well placed header enabled Ross Draper to slide in at the back post to stab the ball home.
Dyer made it five six minutes later after excellent approach work down the right by Elliott Durrell. After taking the ball to the bye-line the midfielder pulled the ball back into the six yard box for Dyer to smash the ball into the net despite Hernandez’s efforts to block the shot.
Briggs had a long range effort well saved by Hernandez but with the game won the Pitmen began to play possession football which kept the crowd entertained as they shouted olé. At the end of the game the Pitmen had increased their lead at the top of the league to 8 points.
