FC United of Manchester 3 - 0 Hednesford

Saturday, 29 November 2008 00:00
The Pitmen have now only took one point from the last three League games as on Saturday they lost three nil away at FC United of Manchester. The game played at Gigg Lane the home of Bury FC was shrouded by a blanket of fog which made watching the game difficult for the large crowd.

Manager Dean Edwards selected new signing Anthony Robinson in place of Elliott Durrell who dropped down onto the bench. There was also one other change as Tom Marshall had to sit out the game due to a one match suspension and his replacement Scott Stamps only lasted 23 minutes before he was forced to leave the pitch with an injury.

The UniBond League’s leading goal scorer Kyle Wilson showed his intent in the 9th minute when a shot from 25 yards was saved by Stuart Brock. The play went straight up field where Adam Burley scuffed a shot wide of the right hand post.

Hesitancy at the back between Stuart Brock and his defenders allowed Simon Carden to get a touch on the ball which luckily for the Pitmen went well wide.

Ross Dyer went close with an attempted flick shot at the near post from a Burley cross after Tyrone Barnett had chased a long ball to pull it back for Burley. With the Pitmen failing to create many chances the opening goal nearly came from United’s Rob Nugent who nearly turned into his own net Chas Sheppard’s low cross from the right.

FCUM scored in the 13th minute, they passed the ball across the field from the right to Jerome Wright, he got past Sam Hall to easily and pulled the ball back for Kyle Wilson to side foot the ball home from 15 yards. Barnett had a chance to equalise soon after but his effort lacked pace was saved on the line.

The Pitmens form was below the standard they had set for this season, Ross Draper showed that when he sent a simple pass straight to Kyle Wilson who hit a 25 yard shot which went well over the crossbar.

Dyer was fouled on the right wing, Gomes free kick was met by Barnett who sent a looping header straight into Ashton’s arms. Sheppard was fouled soon after and again Barnett headed Gomes free kick straight to the FCUM keeper.

Brock saved the Pitmen from falling further behind when he had to use his feet to deny Tommy Turner a goal after he broke clear into the penalty area.

Gomes got caught on the ball in the 39th minute inside the penalty area by Wright but the FCUM forward took to much time over taking a shot which gave Gomes the time to make a tackle and clear the ball away.

Early in the second half Decio Gomes halted a FCUM attack then cleared the danger by hitting a long ball forward to Ross Dyer who used his pace to break into the FCUM penalty box. Dyer over run the ball which made the angle for a shot more difficult as his left footed effort went wide of the left hand post.

Dyer who again used his pace to get clear was denied a goal by Sam Ashton when his shot from the edge of the box was saved by the keeper It was Brocks turn to make a great save when in the 54th minute he made a one handed save to deny Turner a goal.

In an attempt to stir the Pitmen into action Dean Edwards made a double substitution in the 57 minute when Sean Platt and Elliott Durrell replaced Chad Sheppard and Anthony Robinson.

Durrell nearly made an immediate impact after Barnett had taken a quick free kick, his pass picked out Sam Hall on the right, he pulled the ball back to mark Briggs who hit a good ball into the box where Durrell’s header forced the keeper into making a diving save to tip the ball round the post for a corner.

On the hour Ross Dyer and FCUM’s Rob Nugent needed lengthy treatment to head injuries. The free kick which was taken three minutes later by Briggs fell to Draper on the left of the box but he pulled his shot over the crossbar.

Gomes made a rare mistake in the 70th minute when he allowed Turner to get past him, Turner then slipped the ball forward to Wilson who had made a well timed cross field run to take the ball around Brock to score into an empty net.

Elliott Durrell was cautioned in the 74th minute for a foul tackle on Simon Carden then two minutes later Barnett climbed well above the FCUM defenders to send a firm header from Platt’s right wing cross which was saved by Ashton

Chris Baguley was allowed to much space and hit a shot from 20 yards which went wide then at the other end of the pitch Durrell tested Ashton when he flicked on Platt’s cross but the keeper kept the ball out by making a low save

The home crowd who sang for the whole of the game were rewarded with another goal in the 85th minute when a cross from the right went across the box and was met by Wright who hit a first time left footed volley just inside the left hand post.

FCUM substitute Nick Robinson should have made the day even more miserable for the Pitmen and their fans as in added on time he missed a header from only two yards out.
